It was identification with their thoughts, attachment to their own negative fear- fuelled beliefs that caused the perpetrators of the Oslo massacre to commit their heinous crime. Complete disconnect from the Divinity within. From the silence within. From the Knower within. Completely enslaved by the false sense of self , created by the ego.

‘Identification with your mind creates an opaque screen of concepts, labels , images, judgments and definitions that blocks all true relationship,’ says Eckhart Tolle in The Power of Now. ‘It is the screen of thought that creates the illusion of separateness, the illusion that there is you and a totally separate ‘other’.’

We all do this in varying degrees most of the time. We hold onto beliefs about others which we could see, on only a momentary reflection, are simply not true. We project our disowned aspects onto complete strangers and then judge them for that quality. The perpetrator saw darkness in his victims, but the darkness existed in him.

We do not know how to stand back and become the ever- present witness to our thoughts and unquestioned beliefs. We just don’t know how to create a space between our true selves and our thoughts. Most people don’t have a clue about how to connect to their true selves. It requires a gap to open up in the stream of thoughts. It requires ‘no-mind’, so that the light of your consciousness can grow stronger.

If ‘the other’ is seen as a threat in any way, our ego convinces us to somehow neutralize, destroy or annihilate that threat. In the Oslo case, it went far beyond a mere judgment and led to the physical slaying of innocent people. The faulty belief fueled the fear, the judgment and the decision to act , resulting in a massive tragedy, the impact of which reaches well beyond the borders of Norway.. Seemingly senseless.

But, paradoxically, this event becomes the catalyst through which a deeper truth can emerge and without which , it probably would remain dormant on an unconscious level.

Because just like dark brown in a painting offsets the blue in a way that it vibrates with even more intensity, so a tragedy of this nature, dark as it is, enables us to birth into the world an enormous amount of light.

The light streams in through the hearts of all those touched by the tragedy in waves of compassion and love and support. These qualities arise from a place within us that exists beyond the thinking mind. They emanate from our Divinity. As help and sympathy pours in from nations across the world, it gives voice to a deeper truth, that goes beyond mind created barriers. We are not separate. We  are connected on the level of the formless, which lies beyond the myriad of forms that are manifest in our magnificent and diverse world.

Ego, usually at the forefront of our internal dialogue, momentarily takes a back seat. No one asks, how good looking was that victim? Was he or she gay ? How wealthy or successful was the family? What religion was the victim? Its irrelevant. Tragedy reveals the deeper truth that we are all equal . Every life matters. Every life is deeply valuable.

This event calls on us , as humanity, with even more urgency than before, to put our stake in the ground for all that is good and for the light. Its time that we question our judgments, deconstruct our outdated belief systems which have been handed down through the generations , access that realm that exists in each and every one of us, where we know that we are all connected . It calls on us to evolve beyond the thought patterns of the past and create new and empowering higher vibration belief systems based on the deeper truths. It calls on us to suspend mind created barriers based on religion, sexual orientation, culture, intellect or success. It calls for a deep honoring of all of humanity, those who have it all and those who are in the experience of having nothing.

Identification with thought is only a stage in the evolution of consciousness and there will be a time when collectively, we will know this. Until then, we will need to learn , with every act of darkness, that the highest evolutionary response is to react with outpourings of light. As humanity, and with the assistance of mass media and modern technology, we are learning to do this. I believe we have found the sense in the senseless.

Road to Tolle

Right beneath your thoughts, like the sea beneath a wave, like the sky behind the clouds, exists pure awareness. The quality of pure awareness is stillness, space, connection and joy. Your essential nature, which is beyond form, is ever present, and connected on the level of the formless to the formless underlying every other form.

I recently listened to Eckhart Tolle on You Tube, speaking on various subjects, and what struck me was that when he speaks, his thoughts do not arise from the mind, or from some mental construct but from this deeper realm of reality, the formless.  The gap between his thoughts. He speaks slowly, deliberately and you know that his words emanate from the silence and point you in the direction of a deeper truth. You just know it to be a deeper truth . And when he says something which he finds amusing, his laughter bubbles up from that same deep inner space with utter joy. It is worth listening to him , just to hear that laugh! I’ve heard that laugh in children and the dope- induced infectious giggles of friends. But hearing it in a grown man, like Eckhart Tolle, is divine. It puts a beautiful smile on my face and momentarily provides a glimpse of the sky beyond.

I want to live from that level of awareness. Permanently. I have been there. Briefly. It was magnificent beyond description . Literally beyond description because words cannot describe that state of awareness. So much of what I knew in theory, became clear to me in that moment as a deep Knowing. I was awestruck by my realizations and my thoughts were like little flies on the periphery of my consciousness. I had escaped my mind…. for just a moment. Like a fish trapped in a net, I found a hole and swam through. Eckhart in one of his talks, says that the point of entry into that realm is the present moment. You can’t do it, in the future . So give up thoughts of wanting to one day get there. The time is now and you need to deeply desire it. With every cell of your body.

He also spoke about the purpose of suffering. He said most of us choose to grow through suffering. And the point at which you decide to do so, is when you have had ‘enough suffering’. Most suffering is created by the mind and mental constructs created by the mind and not the actual lived experience. We have the power to bypass the thoughts and beliefs that cause the suffering in the first place, witness them , and in so doing dis-identify from them and then connect with a deeper truth, which demands, inter alia, the humble acceptance of what is. So where I am still suffering, its because I have not had enough ! Ugh! Our suffering gives us our juice, our identity and turns our life into an endlessly fascinating drama! Only you can drop it. Only you can seek out a deeper truth.

I recently read an article by Kute Blackson  which lists the 7 Keys to Suffering. It really demonstrates that suffering is a choice. Here is an abridged version:

  • Resist everything. Resist what is. Fight against what is happening in your life. This is a guaranteed method to suffer.

Key Solution: Accept what is so you can decide how to shift it.

  •           Holding the belief ‘The experience that is happening to me should not be happening to me. I should be having some other experience than the one I am having.’ Guaranteed to keep you stuck.

Key Solution: Embrace your current experience. It is the experience you are meant to be having because you are having it right now. Trust that, and focus on what you can learn and how you can grow. Choose to see the experience through the lens that it is here to help you to grow.

  • Focusing on all the things that you cannot control. This will only cause you to feel completely helpless and disempowered. A recipe for worry and anxiety. No matter how much you worry, it will not change the situation. When you are done worrying, the situation will be the same.

Key Solution: Focus on what you can control. Take actions that are in your power, step by step.

  • Refusing to change. Keeping on doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is what the great psychotherapist, Rolo May, defined as insanity. We get so set in our ways that we are afraid to give up known suffering for the unknown possibility of happiness.

Key Solution: Embrace change. Be willing to do something different. Let go. Go into the unknown. Take different actions.

  • Give up your responsibility. Be a victim. Play the blame game making everyone else at fault or responsible for your life and how you feel.

Key Solution: Take full responsibility for your current reality and decide what changes you are committed to making. Give up blame.

  • Focus on everything that is wrong with your life. Whether a relationship or a person. When you focus on what is wrong you will surely find it. Gets you into a great negative cycle.

Key Solution : Start focusing on what you are grateful for. What you appreciate, expands.

  • Denial; Lie to yourself and others. Pretend everything is fine when you know it isn’t . We all know deep down that when you avoid facing what is,, you end up staying stuck and repeating the same patterns of pain and relationship.

Key Solution: Tell the truth to yourself first. Tell the truth to those in your life. Be honest. Face reality.

You hold the padlock and you hold the key to your freedom.
